Pegasus AeroNautics is currently producing and delivering the RM-20 Wind Sailor™ which is a digital processing system with a large easy to read 360 degree analog needle depicting apparent wind direction and a digital LCD numeric readout of apparent wind speed.  In April 2015 we began shipment of the the RM-10 Apparent Wind Sensor which is an even lower cost option for determining wind data with a rotating mast sailboat.   The RM-10 has no display capability but just like the RM-20, it allows mast rotation compensated NMEA wind data to be fed directly to your GPS, Chartplotter, or other device for display.


The Wind Sailor™ apparent wind indicator has been designed for use on recreational sailboats, it is specifically engineered for use on sailboats with a rotating main mast, like the MacGregor 26M, but can also be configured for the more traditional fixed / non-rotating mast sailboats. Another key aspect in the system design is that the mast head which was developed for trailering sailboats - The unit can be quickly detached and reattach to the top of the mast, accurately without the need for re-calibration. The installation kit includes all the wiring and connectors, with most of the terminations already completed.

The display head unit is molded with a special polycarbonate – acrylonitrile butadiene styrene bend of material to create one of the strongest most durable plastics for the harsh marine environment. The faceplate is painted with a polyurethane base and resilient complementary graphics which are easy to read in bright sunlight or dusk/dawn conditions. For night time viewing the system utilizes LED lights illuminating a bezel ring which can be default configured or adjusted for the current conditions.

The Wind Sailor™ gives you one of the largest displays on the market with nearly a four inch diameter clear acrylic lens window opening to a 360 degree sweeping needle representing wind direction and a completely sunlight readable LCD display for apparent wind speed. Designed for typical sailing conditions, the bezel is completely sealed and filled with nitrogen to limit buildup of fog or moisture within the unit.

In addition to supporting dedicated apparent wind data to the display unit the system also outputs standard NMEA wind instrument data which can be interfaced to a compatible tablet or GPS / Chartplotter.  This data may be used to provide true wind direction and speed as well as velocity made good or other parameter to aid in sailing or navigating your vessel.

CUSTOM SENSOR DESIGN

In the wind business you are only as good as your weakest component, hence behind this great display unit you will find some of the latest state of the art sensors to provide you with the most accurate wind information posible.


Both the mast head wind direction sensor and the mast base rotational position sensor utilize a sealed magnetic angular sensing device.  This not only allows for a low friction rotational force but also physically decouples the rotator to allow 360 degrees of free spinning.  Yes even the base mount is free spinning so no special care is needed when rigging your trailerable sailboat mast. Note - the magnetic sensors used in our design are not affected by the earth's magnetic poles like other sensitive heading device on the market.  Our sensors use sealed electronics coupled via a small physical magnet at the rotator.  All of the electronics to these sensors are potted and sealed in special marine epoxy designed for extreme outdoor conditions. The sensors technology allows the system to determine positions better than one degree of resolution and once calibrated (after installation) the display head unit retains the proper offset data for position repeatability even through extensive setup and tear down cycles encountered on a trailering sailboat.  


Separate from the wind direction, a cup style wind speed detector is used to determine the speed of the wind.  The top placement of the cups allows the mounting to take advantage of a very low friction, hardened bearing on the spindle providing the best assessment of speed over a very wide range.  The durability of this design has been witnessed through hurricane force winds over 100 MPH.  The mast head unit extends the sensors up and forward to ensure they are in clean flowing air for the most accurate measurements.

It is almost impossible to competitively design and build a marine product in the USA today. Most company's have large manufacturing facilities overseas and produce thousands of units in each production run. Pegasus AeroNautics builds each and every part at their facilities headquartered in Independence Oregon. All the components to the system are hand built and tested resulting in a quality product. Being a small company with very low overhead we have been able to introduce these products at a very competitive price point.


Specific to the MacGregor 26M is a custom designed sensor adapter which allows the mast sensor to mount inside the mast where it is fully protected through tear down and set up of the mast.  The mast sensor can rotate 360 degrees around so you don't have to worry about any rotational restrictions like other sensors may have.   Being completely inside the mast it is fully protected from damaged or being bent, helping guarantee its accuracy.



HOW DOES IT COMPARE WITH OTHER SYSTEMS?

The Wind Sailor™ is really the only instrument in its class, it was specifically designed for rotational mast sailboats from inception as such it illiminates the need for a costly "secondary" unit or box to make the mast rotation corrections.  Some wind system manufactures have made available compensation systems but these typically require much more expensive and complex additional equipment.  We have tried to list a few of the competitive systems on the market to give you a clear view in your decision making.
