Wind Sailor Installation

OVERVIEW

These instructions are intended give a quick over of the installation, configuration, and operation of the Wind Sailor™ apparent wind indicator. A system installation manual with detailed instructions and over 50 color photographs, illustrations, and drawings will take you step by step through the the entire installation, configuration and operation.  That manual is provided with your purchase.  The installation of this system is not very difficult and can be performed by the boat owner if he is comfortable with opening up panels, cutting access and mounting holes, and basic electrical wiring. In many cases a marine dealer or repair/service facility will perform the work.

The generic illustrations shown here can be adapted to any sailboat.  The mast rotation sensor mounting technique was designed for the MacGregor 26M, however if this does not fit your specific boat we may be able to work with you to produce something that will work in your application.  Sailboats without rotating mast can take advantage of a reduced product kit - which does not include the mast sensor and has a reduced conductor wiring kit.


MASTHEAD WIND SENSOR MOUNTING

The masthead wind sensor assembly includes the wind direction sensor and wind speed sensor pre-wired and terminated into a 4-pin circular connector.  The sensors are mounted on a metal frame structure to extend them above and forward of the sailboat mast into clean undisturbed air. The frame attaches to a flat mast flange bracket using two plastic over-molded brass thumb nuts.  This arrangement allows the assembly to easily be attached / detached from the mast when trailering.

The masthead flange bracket in is permanently attached to the top of the sailboat mast via two screws through the mast cap, these screws in turn become the studs which maintain the alignment of the masthead, such that re-calibration is not needed after the initial installation is completed. 

MAST BASE SENSOR MOUNTING 

The mast base sensor for the Wind Sailor instrument was designed to mount inside the mast such that the entire unit is protected both during normal operation and erection / stowage of the mast.  This design is optimized for the MacGregor 26M and Tattoo 26 but could be adapted to most other rotational mast sailboats.  The sensor utilizes a custom molded adapter bracket and a single screw / lock nut for mounting.

DISPLAY HEAD UNIT INSTALLATION

The display head unit is typically mounted in the cockpit just outside the cabin door or at the helm of the boat.  It must be mounted on a flat surface and you need access behind the area to secure the mounting wing nuts.  A gasket is provided with the kit to provide a weather tight seal without the need to caulk.  
 
A template is provided with the installation kit to easily mark the hole for drilling. A 3 1/2" hole saw is used for the body of the instrument, and an 11/64 drill bit is used for the two mounting holes.
Simple Electrical Wiring

Part of the installation includes routing and terminating the electrical wires.  The Wind Sailor installation kit includes completely pre-wired electrical harnesses with all the connectors needed so you can maintain the flexibility of easily tearing down the sailboat's mast for travel.  The only "electrical" work you need to do is match the same color wires to each other and crimp them together with the included butt splices (one end of the butt splice is already crimped onto the cable assembly) and connect the power & ground wires.

Here is an overview of the wiring harnesses.  They are broken down into 4 segments so they are easy to route through the mast and hull of the boat. All connectors are round bayonet/cannon style with gold plated contacts (pins).
